We left him there despite recognising his plea
"Bitte helfen Sie mir, um Himmels Willen,
Bitte helfen Sie mir"
For we had our own to haul in before dawn's curfew.
But going past again, humanity overcame.
His empty pistol - we loaded one chamber
And knowingly wrapped his weak grip.
A relief broke through the twisted grimace
And thanks were offered, for rest was promised.
Surely those next minutes were like hours
Until we heard endless misery was likely ended.
